Italy’s North-South Divide: The Real Story Behind Napoli vs Juventus

Some people believe that Maradona and Platini sparked a conflict between Napoli and Juventus, but the truth is that they, specifically Maradona, brought back to the surface a regional and class conflict that the Italian peninsula had suffered from for hundreds of years.

An economic conflict between wealthy industrial northern Italy and poor agricultural southern Italy – a divide so pronounced that today Lombardy’s GDP per capita stands at 127% of the EU average while Calabria manages only 56%. A cultural conflict between the birthplace of the Renaissance in the north and the homeland of the Mafia in the south, where southerners are branded as “terroni” (peasants) – a deeply derogatory term. A geographic conflict between the snowy Alps in the north and the raging Vesuvius volcano in the south.

A conflict between people who consider themselves European and want to separate from the burden of the south, as they call it (the slogan of the Northern League party in Italy), and people who consider themselves Mediterranean with their own customs and laws that don’t suit the northerners and don’t want to give them up.

This is a conflict of identity and traditions of a people before it is a sporting conflict, and anyone who thinks this conflict has ended is mistaken. When Maradona arrived in Naples in 1984, no southern mainland team had ever won Serie A. His success with Napoli broke the northern monopoly and became a symbol of southern pride against centuries of marginalization.

Even to this day, Juventus fans welcome Napoli with the phrase “Welcome to Italy” while Napoli fans raise their famous banner “I am not Italian… I am Neapolitan.” During Maradona’s era, northern fans displayed banners reading “Vesuvius, wash them with fire” and “Napoli, cholera sufferers” – showing how deep the territorial discrimination runs.

When international star Sophia Loren was told “you are Italian,” she interrupted the interviewer and replied: “I am not Italian… I am Neapolitan.”
